Rapid Product Creator: Removing a Blocker in Store Setup

Company: InkSoft | Role: Co-Designer | Timeline: 2017

Impact summary

Designed Rapid Product Creator, letting store owners upload art and apply it across multiple blank products at once instead of building products one at a time. Timed walkthroughs comparing the old and new processes showed a 75% reduction in product creation time.

The problem

Creating pre-decorated products for a store meant working through each product individually, even when the same or similar art was being applied across many products at once, a common need for team, school, and company stores with large, repetitive catalogs. This became a real blocker as part of a broader initiative to speed up store creation: a store creation wizard let owners set up a store quickly, but setup still stalled if products didn't already exist ahead of time.

My role & the constraint that made it hard

I worked on this alongside another designer. The challenge was handling real complexity, selecting from a catalog, uploading art, applying it across multiple products, while still keeping the flow feeling simple and fast for the user, not like a technical bulk-operations tool.

Process

Discovery: The store creation wizard had solved store setup speed, but users still hit a wall immediately after: they couldn't finish setting up a store without pre-existing products, and building those one at a time undercut the whole point of a fast setup process.

Key decision: We designed a flow letting users select blank products directly from the catalog, upload art once, and apply it across multiple products in a single pass, replacing a repetitive, one-at-a-time process with one that matched how owners actually needed to work: the same art, across many products, at once.

The solution

Rapid Product Creator let store owners go from blank catalog products to a set of finished, decorated products in one fast flow, removing the need to have products fully built before a store could go live.

Outcome

  • Reduced product creation time by 75%, measured through timed walkthroughs comparing the old and new processes.

  • Removed a real blocker in the broader store creation wizard initiative, letting owners finish store setup without needing products built in advance.
