Checkout Redesign: A Mobile-First Rebuild for a Multi-Product Platform
Company: InkSoft | Role: Sole designer | Timeline: Sep 2020
Impact summary
Redesigned InkSoft's e-commerce checkout as a mobile-first, single-page experience, reducing cart abandonment by 42% on a platform generating $250M+ in annual user revenue.
The problem
InkSoft's checkout wasn't mobile responsive, a serious problem given how much shopper traffic came through mobile. InkSoft's business customers, print and apparel shops using the platform to sell to their own customers, were losing sales because their shoppers couldn't easily complete a purchase on their phones. The complaints came directly from InkSoft's customers on behalf of the shoppers they were losing.
My role & the constraint that made it hard
As sole designer, I owned the redesign end-to-end. The real complexity wasn't just making checkout responsive, it was that InkSoft supported genuinely different product types in the same flow: pre-decorated products a shopper could buy as-is, and fully custom products a shopper was actively designing. A single checkout experience had to work cleanly for both.
Process
Discovery: The core issue wasn't just responsiveness, it was structure. The existing checkout split steps across separate pages, which fragmented an already mobile-unfriendly experience further.
Key decision: I redesigned checkout as a mobile-first, single-page flow with fewer, more visible steps, keeping every step in view at once rather than forcing shoppers through separate pages. This meant a shopper could see and edit any part of their order without losing their place in the flow, a meaningful difference on mobile specifically, where page-to-page navigation is more disruptive than on desktop.
The solution
The redesigned checkout consolidated a fragmented, multi-page flow into a single mobile-first view with clear, editable steps, supporting both pre-decorated and fully custom products within the same experience.
Outcome
Reduced cart abandonment by 42%, tracked through InkSoft's internal abandoned cart tracker.
Contributed to a platform generating $250M+ in annual user revenue.
